Debt Snowball vs Avalanche: Which Pays Off Debt Faster?
Snowball pays smallest balances first. Avalanche pays highest APR first. We compare both with real examples so you can pick the right strategy.
Both the snowball and avalanche methods pay minimums on every debt and then throw every extra dollar at one targeted debt. The only difference is which debt you target first.
- Snowball: target the smallest balance first.
- Avalanche: target the highest APR first.

A real example
Imagine three debts:
- Credit Card A — $2,500 at 22.99% APR, $75 minimum
- Credit Card B — $5,800 at 18.5% APR, $145 minimum
- Car loan — $12,000 at 6.9% APR, $280 minimum
Add $200 extra per month. With the snowball, you attack Card A first — gone in about 11 months. Then Card B, then the car. Total interest paid: roughly $3,400. Debt-free in about 40 months.
With the avalanche, you attack Card A first too (highest APR), then Card B, then the car — same order in this case. But when the highest APR is on the largest balance, avalanche wins significantly. Try it in the calculator above with your numbers.
When avalanche clearly wins
When your highest-APR debt is also a large balance — say a $15,000 credit card at 24% — avalanche can save thousands. The snowball would have you ignore that 24% for years while you pick off smaller debts.
When snowball clearly wins
When you've never finished a debt payoff before. The behavioral research is consistent: people who get a quick win in the first 90 days are dramatically more likely to keep going. A small interest penalty is a fair price for that momentum.
Hybrid approach
Knock out one or two small debts with the snowball to get hooked, then switch to avalanche for the rest. The calculator above lets you model both — Avalanche comparison is a Pro feature.
Frequently asked
Which is better, snowball or avalanche?⌄
Avalanche saves more money mathematically. Snowball helps more people actually finish. Pick avalanche if you're disciplined, snowball if you've quit a plan before.
Can I switch from snowball to avalanche later?⌄
Yes. Many people start with snowball to build momentum, then switch to avalanche once a small win or two has them hooked.
